Which games turn synergy math into endless runs?
These three get their variety from combinatorics. We wrote a longer piece on why deckbuilder games are addictive; the short version is that a reward screen offering three cards at a time forces every run down a different branch of a very large tree.
1. Slay the Spire
The cleanest proof that a small card pool can hide a bottomless decision tree. MegaCrit’s 2019 deckbuilder gives you four characters with separate card pools and 20 Ascension levels, each stacking one more handicap on the last. Card rewards arrive three at a time from a shuffled pool, so no two decks converge, and climbing Ascension keeps punishing the default picks that worked one level lower.
2. Balatro
Poker rebuilt as an engine-building math problem. Every hand is scored through the jokers you have collected from a pool of 150, and even their left-to-right order changes the result. LocalThunk built it solo and shipped it in 2024. 3. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
Item synergy by sheer volume. More than 700 items with the Repentance expansion, and most of them stack: your tears change size, trajectory, and behavior as pickups combine. Edmund McMillen’s roguelike has grown into that pool from its 2011 original; layer unlockable characters and alternate routes on top and the odds of two similar runs drop to roughly zero.

5. Spelunky 2
Random caves, deterministic physics, your fault every time. The caves reroll each run, but every trap, rock, and shopkeeper follows strict rules that interact. Derek Yu’s 2020 sequel gets its variety from collisions between systems, so runs end in ways no designer scripted.
6. Hades
The roguelike where repetition is the story. Dying advances the plot instead of resetting it: characters remember your previous escapes and react to them. Supergiant Games’ 2020 action roguelike also reshapes your kit every run with boons from Olympian gods, and the Pact of Punishment heat ladder lets you dial the difficulty per attempt.

7. Dwarf Fortress
A world generator that happens to contain a game. Tarn and Zach Adams have been building it since 2002, and the 2022 Steam release finally gave it approachable visuals. Before you place a single stockpile, it simulates centuries of history: civilizations, wars, monsters, dead poets. Every fortress fails differently, which is why the community motto is “losing is fun.”
8. RimWorld
Replayability measured in stories per hour. Ask any player how their last colony fell apart and the answer is never the same event twice. Ludeon Studios’ colony sim (1.0 in 2018) hands event pacing to one of three AI storytellers: Cassandra escalates steadily, Phoebe leaves room to breathe, Randy ignores fairness entirely. 9. Minecraft
The sandbox where you invent the objective. Tonight’s session can be a farm, a redstone computer, or a base tour with friends. Mojang’s 2011 survival builder does generate endless seeded worlds, but the real engine is intent: when the player defines the goal, the content never runs out because it was never fixed.
10. Tetris
Four decades of depth from seven pieces. Alexey Pajitnov’s 1984 puzzle game has no procedural levels, no items, no synergies. It stays replayable because the skill ceiling sits far above any human player, and modern versions still host score chases and world championships. Mastery alone can carry infinite sessions.
