Dark Humor Games on Steam, From Silly to Bleak
What are the best dark humor games on Steam?
Updated October 2026.
The best dark humor games on Steam, sorted from silly to bleak, are Tropico 6, Dungeons 4, Sintopia, Graveyard Keeper, Cult of the Lamb, Have a Nice Death, Kindergarten 2, The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe, Little Misfortune and LISA: The Painful. The best of them is Cult of the Lamb. The darkest, by a distance, is LISA.
I pick Cult of the Lamb over Kindergarten 2, which scores higher, for two reasons: its 96% positive comes from 130,155 reviews, by far the largest sample here (as of October 2026), and its only Steam content note is cartoon violence, so it is the one I can hand to almost anyone.
A dark humor game is a game that plays death, cruelty, misery or moral rot for laughs, treating a subject that would be grim anywhere else as routine, cute or office paperwork.
How I picked: every game here carries Steam’s own Dark Humor user tag, and every one is rated Very Positive or better on Steam (as of October 2026). I left out games that are only gory or only crude. The sections run from games where you run something rotten and laugh about it, through cute games that hide a knife, to stories where the joke ends up on you.
Which dark humor game fits what you want?
| Game | Genre | What the joke is about | How dark | Mac |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tropico 6 | City builder | Running an island as El Presidente, election promises included | Silly | Yes |
| Dungeons 4 | Dungeon builder and real-time strategy | Being the Absolute Evil and invading a fairy-tale overworld | Silly | No |
| Sintopia | Management and god game | Hell run as a company, with you as middle manager | Silly | No |
| Graveyard Keeper | Management RPG | A cemetery business that cuts every corner, including the corpses | Grinning | Yes |
| Cult of the Lamb | Roguelite and colony builder | A cute lamb founding a cult | Grinning | Yes |
| Have a Nice Death | Action roguelike | Death as the overworked boss of Death Incorporated | Grinning | No |
| Kindergarten 2 | Puzzle adventure | A school day you replay, with new ways to get murdered | Dark | Yes |
| The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe | First-person exploration | A narrator who argues with your choices | Dark | Yes |
| Little Misfortune | Interactive story | A sweet 8-year-old led into the woods by a voice | Bleak | Yes |
| LISA: The Painful | Side-scrolling RPG | A wasteland where choices cost limbs or friends | Bleak | Yes |
“How dark” is my own scale. Silly: the evil is a punchline about bosses and profit. Grinning: real death, gore or a cult, played as a gag. Dark: the joke lands on a child or on you. Bleak: the story wants it to hurt. The sections below group the games by how the joke works, so a section can hold more than one step of the scale.

Prices are Steam’s regular US prices. Most of these were discounted when I checked, so you may pay less. Seven of the ten run on macOS; Dungeons 4, Sintopia and Have a Nice Death are Windows only on Steam (as of October 2026).
Which dark humor games put you in charge of something rotten?
In these four you run something rotten, and the rot is mostly a punchline about bosses, paperwork and profit. The first three are the gentlest way in.
Tropico 6: the dictator sim
Tropico 6 is the lightest pick here, a city builder whose joke is that it lets you be a dictator and never scolds you for it. As El Presidente you run your own banana republic across four eras, and the store page promises election speeches from your balcony full of “promises that you can’t possibly keep”. You can also send agents abroad to steal world wonders such as the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower. If the politics is what you like, our list of video games about capitalism goes further in that direction.
Dungeons 4: the Absolute Evil
Play Dungeons 4 if you want to be the dark lord rather than the dark lord’s accountant. The Absolute Evil and its “trusted cough servant”, the Dark Elf Thalya, build a dungeon for their creatures and then march into a green, unicorn-filled overworld to “kindly remind the good people” who rules their lands (Steam). Half of it is a dungeon builder, half is real-time strategy, and two players can run one dungeon together in co-op. It is the most expensive game here at $49.99 regular (as of October 2026), and it is Windows only.
Sintopia: Hell as a company
Sintopia is the newest game on the list, and the one to pick if you want to build the afterlife’s machinery and automate it. You are a freshly promoted middle manager at Hell Incorporated, told to “re-educate” sinners, resurrect the worthy and turn eternal damnation into “an optimized business machine” (Steam). You build sin-processing facilities, perfect their automation, keep your “imployees” paid on time, and throw lightning at the living when they need motivating. It came out on 16 April 2026 and has the fewest reviews here, 1,095 (as of October 2026). Steam’s content notes flag drug references, mild violence and sexual innuendo. It is Windows only.
Graveyard Keeper: the cemetery business
I put Graveyard Keeper one step darker than the first three because its cost-cutting tip is the corpses themselves. Its own store page calls it “the most inaccurate medieval cemetery management sim”, and suggests grinding up the organs of the dead and selling them to the village butcher. It describes itself as a game about “the spirit of capitalism”, and also as a love story. Underneath the jokes it is a crafting and farming loop with quests and dungeons.
Which dark humor games are cute on the outside?
These three use soft art, chirpy characters or a school playground as the wrapper. The cuter the art, the worse the thing it is drawing.
Cult of the Lamb: the cute cult
Cult of the Lamb is the best game on this list and the easiest to recommend. You play a possessed lamb, saved from death by an ominous stranger, who repays the debt by founding a cult of woodland followers (Steam). Between roguelite dungeon runs you build your camp, give sermons and perform dark rituals, and the art stays cartoon-cute while you do it. It is the most reviewed game here by a wide margin: 130,155 reviews, 96% positive (as of October 2026). If you like its split between runs and a base, our list of roguelites with management between runs has more of that shape.
Have a Nice Death: Death as the boss
Have a Nice Death tells the same corporate-afterlife joke as Sintopia, but as a fast 2D action roguelike: you swing the scythe yourself instead of laying out facilities. You play an overworked Death whose employees at Death Incorporated have run rampant and wrecked both the balance of souls and his vacation plans (Steam). Every run ends with a performance review, and taking more power for yourself can make the Labor Inspector hand your subordinates upgrades or raise the price of koffee. It has over 70 weapons and spells, and it is Windows only.
Kindergarten 2: the worst school day
Kindergarten 2 is the first game here that is properly dark, which is why I rate it a step above the other two cute ones. You replay the same Tuesday at a new school over and over, helping children with their “assignments”, and the store page promises “new ways to get ruthlessly murdered”. Its own feature list includes aiding and abetting a fratricide. Each loop is a puzzle about who needs what from you, and in what order. Steam’s content note warns of gore and violence directed at children. It has the highest score on the list: 98% positive across 5,812 reviews (as of October 2026).
Which dark humor games turn the joke on you?
In the last three the narrator, the voice or the world is the one laughing, and you are the punchline.
The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe: the narrator
The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is the one to play if you have never had a game argue back. Stanley finds every co-worker in his office gone, and a narrator, voiced by Kevan Brighting, tells you what Stanley does next. You can obey him or not, and the store page warns that “you will make a choice, and you will have your choices taken from you” (Steam). Its tagline sums it up: “You are not here to win.” This edition keeps the 2013 original and adds new content and content warnings. It also appears in our list of games set in ordinary places, since it starts in an ordinary office.
Little Misfortune: the voice in the woods
Little Misfortune is a story where the cuteness is the trap. Misfortune Ramirez Hernandez, eight years old, sets out to win Eternal Happiness as a gift for her mother, led into the woods by her new friend Mr. Voice (Steam). The feature list mixes “pet a doggy” with “visit a pet cemetery with a shovel” and “missing children”, which tells you how the tone works. It shares a universe with Fran Bow, from the same studio, Killmonday Games.
LISA: The Painful: the bleakest
LISA: The Painful is the darkest game on this list, and the one to skip if you want the joke without the pain. It is a side-scrolling RPG through a post-apocalyptic wasteland called Olathe, where keeping your party alive can cost you an arm or an eye, and you can bet a party member on Russian roulette for money and lose them for good (Steam). It calls itself “miserable, hilarious”, and I put it last because the misery outweighs the laughs more often than anywhere else here. Its content notes include sexual assault and suicide; a Painless mode plays it for the story. It is the oldest pick here, from 2014.
What does this list leave out?
It leaves out satire aimed at one real industry. If you want a game that mocks a specific business, our list of games that satirize big tech is built that way. It also leaves out games that are only gory or only crude, and party games: a search for dark humor games often turns up card games played around a table, and this list sticks to Steam.
If you want dark humor that lives in a fake computer screen, our games like Hypnospace Outlaw list covers that corner. And if what you want is a joke you can leave running, we wrote a list of funny idle games.
Where our game fits
Our own game, Sam, We Talked About This, sits beside this list rather than on it. Its Steam page carries the Dark Humor and Funny user tags (as of October 2026). Where Tropico 6 and Sintopia have you lay out and steer a place, Sam is an idle incremental game: you scrape data, train models, grow subscribers and buy new hardware, and the loop feeds itself and speeds up. An incremental game is a game built around numbers that grow faster than you can spend them: you buy something that makes more of the resource, which buys more of that thing, until the scale changes and new systems appear. The store puts it this way: “Every sentence, image and video on the internet will feed Sam’s bottomless hunger!” It is unreleased, due on Steam in Q1 2027 (as of October 2026), so there is nothing to point at yet beyond its Steam page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play any of these dark humor games in co-op? Yes, three of them. Dungeons 4 lets two players run one dungeon together online, Cult of the Lamb plays its whole campaign in local co-op as the Lamb and the Goat, and Tropico 6 has online multiplayer for up to 4 players. The other seven are single-player.
Is Cult of the Lamb a dark humor game? Yes. Steam tags it Dark Humor, yet its only content note is cartoon violence, so the darkness sits in the premise, with little of it on screen. That makes it the easiest of the ten to recommend to someone who dislikes gore.
Is LISA: The Painful the darkest game on this list? Yes. Its Steam content notes cover gore, drugs, sexual assault and suicide, and its sacrifices cost your party members arms, eyes or their lives. Kindergarten 2 is the runner-up, with violence directed at children.
How many of these are gentle enough for a first try? Three: Tropico 6, Dungeons 4 and Sintopia, where the evil is a punchline about bosses and profit. After those, Cult of the Lamb keeps the darkness cartoonish, and LISA: The Painful is the one to save for last.
