Games for Low-End Laptops, Checked Against Steam Specs
Which Steam games run on a low-end laptop?
Ten paid Steam games whose own store pages ask for 4 GB of RAM or less: To the Moon, Thomas Was Alone, The Battle of Polytopia, Minit, Baba Is You, Undertale, Celeste, A Short Hike, Terraria and Hollow Knight. Free games are a different list, so none are here. Two need care on a laptop without a graphics card: Minit’s page names only old dedicated cards, and Hollow Knight’s Windows line asks for a GeForce GTX 560 Ti or Radeon HD 7750. If you install one, make it Terraria: its page asks for 2.5 GB of RAM and 128 MB of video memory, names no card, and gets you an open-ended sandbox for $9.99 (as of October 2026). On a very old laptop, start with To the Moon, which asks for 512 MB.
Updated October 2026.
What do the Steam minimum specs say?
Sorted by minimum RAM, lowest first. Every cell is read from the game’s Steam page as of October 2026. Several games were on sale on the check date, so the price column is the regular US price.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| To the Moon | 512 MB | 1024x768 High Color + | Yes | $9.99 |
| Thomas Was Alone | 1 GB | none listed (DirectX: 7.0) | Yes, but players report it fails on current macOS | $9.99 |
| The Battle of Polytopia | 1 GB | 128mb Video Memory | Yes | $14.99 |

How did I check each game’s minimum spec?
Every Steam store page has a system requirements box, and I read each game’s minimum lines straight from Steam’s store data instead of trusting another list. The graphics column copies the Windows graphics line word for word, odd capitals included, and says “none listed” where a page has no graphics line. On a laptop, memory and graphics are the two lines to compare first. I read the Mac flag and the regular US price the same way. One game I expected to include, Return of the Obra Dinn, asks for a “Discrete GPU” on both Windows and Mac, so it is not here.
Integrated graphics is a graphics processor built into the same chip as a laptop’s main processor, sharing the system’s memory instead of having its own, and it is what a laptop without a separate graphics card runs every game on.
Three Windows lines in the table name an integrated Intel chip: Baba Is You (HD 3000), Celeste (HD 4000) and A Short Hike (Graphics 4400). On paper, a laptop with HD 3000 meets Baba Is You’s line, HD 4000 meets Baba’s and Celeste’s, and Intel Graphics 4400 meets all three.
To the Moon
To the Moon is the pick for the oldest laptop you own. Two doctors walk backwards through a dying man’s memories to grant his last wish, which is to go to the moon, and the store calls it a non-combat, story-driven game. Its Windows minimum is 512 MB of RAM and a Pentium III, and its graphics line is only a screen mode, 1024x768 in High Color.
Thomas Was Alone
Thomas Was Alone has the lightest processor line here: a 500 MHz chip, DirectX 7.0 and no graphics line at all on Windows. You guide a group of rectangles with different abilities through 120 levels, with a narrator telling their story. On a Mac, check before you buy: its Mac line still names OS X 10.5, players report in a Steam forum thread that it stopped working on macOS 10.15 Catalina, and another thread is still asking for a 64-bit build. Buy it for a Windows laptop until that changes.
The Battle of Polytopia
The Battle of Polytopia is the strategy pick, and it has the smallest storage line on the list, 160 MB. It is turn-based: you lead one of 16 tribes on a flat world the store calls the Square, alone or in multiplayer. Its graphics line asks for 128 MB of video memory, and its page adds that it needs a 64-bit processor and system.
Minit
Minit is the one to play in short bursts, because a curse ends each day after sixty seconds and the adventure is built around that limit. Its graphics line names two old dedicated cards and no integrated chip, so the page alone cannot tell you how it does on Intel graphics. If short sessions are the point, our list of games for 30-minute sessions has more.
Baba Is You
Baba Is You is the puzzle pick for the oldest laptop with Intel graphics, because it names Intel HD 3000, the oldest integrated chip on any page here, on both its Windows and Mac lines. The rules of each level are blocks you push around, so you can turn yourself into a rock or turn grass into a hot obstacle, and the page counts over 200 levels.
Undertale
Undertale is the pick if you want an RPG with fights in it, since To the Moon has none. Its whole graphics line reads “128MB”, next to 2 GB of RAM and 200 MB of storage. You fall into a world of monsters and never have to kill anyone: the store says you can negotiate out of danger.
Celeste
Celeste is the platformer for a laptop with Intel graphics, because its Windows page names Intel HD 4000 outright, and its processor line is a laptop chip, the Intel Core i3 M380. You help Madeline climb a mountain through 700+ screens of platforming, per the store, with her story told along the way.
A Short Hike
A Short Hike is the slow, gentle pick, and at $7.99 (as of October 2026) the cheapest game in the table. You hike, climb and soar around Hawk Peak Provincial Park on your way to the summit, and the store says there is no need to rush: you can fish, swim or help the other hikers you meet. Its Windows and Mac lines both name Intel Graphics 4400 and a 2 GHz dual-core processor.
Terraria
Terraria is my pick for most low-end laptops: it is the open-ended sandbox of the list, and its graphics line asks for 128 MB of video memory without naming a card. You dig, fight, explore and build in a 2D world, alone or with friends, for as long as you like. One warning for Mac owners: its Mac line still reads OS X 10.9.5 to 10.11.6, older than macOS 10.15, which Valve says future versions of Steam need, so treat that line as out of date. The Mac flag on the page is still yes.
Hollow Knight
Hollow Knight is the heaviest game on the list, and on Windows it belongs here only if your laptop has a graphics card, even an old one. Its Windows line names a GeForce GTX 560 Ti or Radeon HD 7750, 4 GB of RAM, 9 GB of storage and Windows 10 version 21H1 or newer. Its Mac line is kinder: Big Sur 11 and “Metal capable Intel and AMD GPUs”, so a Mac with Intel graphics meets it on paper. You explore a ruined kingdom of insects in hand-drawn 2D, fighting what the store calls tainted creatures.
Which Windows and macOS versions does Steam still run on?
This is the line a spec box hides. Nine of the ten Windows minimums above start at Windows 98, XP or 7, and Steam itself no longer supports any of those. Valve’s support page on Windows 7 and 8 says Steam stopped supporting Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 on January 1, 2024, and its page on 32-bit Windows says it stopped supporting 32-bit Windows on January 1, 2026. In practice, the oldest system Steam still supports and updates is 64-bit Windows 10, whatever the game’s own line says.
Macs have the same floor problem. Valve’s macOS page says Steam stopped supporting macOS 10.13 and 10.14 on February 15, 2024, and that the store would stop counting games with only 32-bit Mac builds as Mac compatible at the end of 2023. A Mac flag can still sit on an old build that a current Mac will not open, as Thomas Was Alone’s forum shows, so read the Mac line before you buy. If you play on a Mac, our lists of idle games for Mac and roguelike games for Mac read the Mac requirements the same way.
How do you check what your laptop has?
On Windows 10 or 11, Settings, then System, then About shows the installed RAM, and the Performance tab in Task Manager names your graphics chip. On a Mac, About This Mac in the Apple menu shows the chip or graphics and the memory. Compare those two lines with the table. If your graphics chip is an Intel one and a game’s page names only dedicated cards, the page cannot promise it will run.
Which one should you install first?
Terraria, for most low-end laptops. If your laptop has Intel graphics and you want a game whose page names your chip, pick from Baba Is You, Celeste and A Short Hike. If you want something to leave running while you work instead, see our list of games to play while working.
Quick answers
Can a laptop with integrated graphics run these games? Yes, on paper, for eight of them. Baba Is You, Celeste and A Short Hike name an Intel chip outright; three more ask only for 128 MB of video memory and two name no chip. Minit names only dedicated cards, and so does Hollow Knight’s Windows line.
Will these games run on Windows 7? No, not reliably through Steam. Valve stopped supporting Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 on January 1, 2024 and says it cannot guarantee Steam keeps working there, so plan on 64-bit Windows 10 even for a game whose page names Windows XP.
Do all ten games run on a current Mac? No. All ten carry the macOS flag on Steam (as of October 2026), but players report that Thomas Was Alone stopped working on macOS 10.15 Catalina, and Terraria’s Mac line still names OS X 10.11, so read those two pages first.
How much RAM do you need for these games? Four GB covers all ten. Eight of them ask for 2 GB or less, and To the Moon asks for 512 MB. Hollow Knight is the only one at 4 GB, and its Windows line also needs Windows 10 version 21H1 or newer.
Where our game fits
Our own game, Sam, We Talked About This, sits beside this list as the last, unreleased row. It is an idle incremental game, and an incremental game is a game built around numbers that grow faster than you can spend them: you buy something that makes more of the resource, which buys more of that thing, until the scale changes and new systems appear. In Sam you scrape data, train AI models on it and let them pull in subscribers, then turn those into cash for more disks, bigger machines and a bigger crew; every game above needs your hands on it to make progress, while Sam’s loop feeds itself and speeds up. Steam lists its Windows minimum as 1 GB of RAM, an Intel Core i3-6100, and Intel HD Graphics 530, GeForce GT 1030 or Radeon R7 240 with 1 GB of video memory and DirectX 11 on 64-bit Windows 10, and its Mac minimum as 2 GB of RAM on macOS 11 Big Sur (as of October 2026). It is unreleased, due on Steam in Q1 2027, so those are the store page’s lines and not a tested result, and they can change before launch. The Steam page for Sam, We Talked About This is live if you want to follow it.
