What is a flow state?

How do games engineer flow?

The challenge-skill balance
This is the hardest condition to hold, because a player’s skill keeps rising. In a 2008 experiment, Johannes Keller and Herbert Bless had people play Tetris under three conditions: one too slow for the player, one too fast, and one that adapted its speed to the player’s skill. The adaptive version produced the strongest reported flow and, notably, the strongest sense that time had sped up. Flow lives in the moving band between boredom and anxiety, so a game has to climb with you. Hades does it with a difficulty system you opt into: beat the game and you can add “Heat” to make future runs harder, keeping the challenge tuned to your growing skill. Balatro does it through escalating antes that keep raising the score you need while you learn stronger joker combinations. In both, the game is chasing the same target: keep the wall just high enough to be worth climbing.

The leading explanation is that flow works by quieting part of your brain. Neuroscientist Arne Dietrich proposed the transient hypofrontality hypothesis in a 2003 paper in Consciousness and Cognition: during deep absorption, activity in the prefrontal cortex temporarily drops. That region handles self-reflection, planning, and, relevant here, your sense of time.
If the machinery that tracks time and monitors the self goes quiet, the felt results follow directly. You stop narrating your own performance, the inner critic goes silent, and your estimate of how long you have been playing falls apart. This is a hypothesis, not settled fact, and the neuroscience of flow is still an active area. But it lines up cleanly with what players describe: the moment you “wake up” from a session and check the clock is the moment the prefrontal cortex comes back online.
Is flow losing track of time the same as addiction?
