What Is a Chess Deckbuilder? Cards, Mana and Runs
Updated October 2, 2026
What a chess deckbuilder is
A chess deckbuilder is a game where you play cards onto a chessboard instead of moving a fixed army: cards summon pieces, cast spells or upgrade what is already there, and the deck grows across a run.
The label is doing two jobs at once, which is why it slides around so much. “Deckbuilder” is borrowed from tabletop, where Dominion introduced the format in 2008 and what improves over a session is the deck itself. “Chess” here usually amounts to a small grid of squares and pieces with fixed movement rules, and little else: enough structure to make where you play a card matter as much as which card you play.
If you only play one, play Usurper. It is the only released game I could verify where a deck, a spendable resource and a between-fight draft all run inside the same chess match, which is the full shape of the idea. Most of the games near it carry half the definition and take the label anyway. None of this comes from my own save files. Every mechanic below is read off a store page, which makes it checkable and makes the feel of playing it second hand.
Cards that move a piece, cards that summon one
Sorting by what playing a card actually does splits the family four ways, and the four produce games that barely resemble each other.
| Card model | What playing a card does | What the deck holds | Where you can see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Movement | Moves your single hero in one chess piece’s pattern | Knight, bishop and rook moves | Pawnbarian |
| Summon | Drops a new piece onto a square, paid for from a resource pool | Units, from pawns up to queens | Usurper |
| Effect | Casts a spell or bends a board rule | Traps, walls, transformations | Yes, My Queen |
| Roster | Decides which pieces exist before the match starts | Custom and fairy pieces | Chess: The Lost Pieces |
Movement decks came first and stay the tightest of the four. In Pawnbarian you control one hero on a tiny dungeon board and your hand is a set of chess moves, so a turn is a question of which piece you want to be right now. If you have never held a chess piece, start here: nothing has to be unlearned first.
Summon decks invert that. In Usurper you push your King up the board to play cards on the front line and stockpile Power to afford the expensive units, so the deck is an army you pay for one piece at a time. It carries all three parts of the definition at once, which is why it is the one I would buy first.
Effect decks keep the chess army mostly normal and put the cards around it. Yes, My Queen has you spend mana on things like summoning a shape shifter that turns into a random figure each turn, starting a zombie outbreak, or building walls, while a separate roster of recruited figures does the actual fighting. Pick this one if you want the spells doing the damage while the chess pieces mostly hold ground.
Roster decks move the building step outside the match. Chess: The Lost Pieces gives you a pool of 30 or more unusual pieces, such as a pawn that has to charge before it moves and a rook that pulls pieces from a distance, and you assemble an army deck as you progress. The pieces are the reason to look at it; its 22 reviews in the table below are almost nothing to judge the reception on.
What mana is actually for
Mana, Power, gold, whatever a given game calls it, exists to solve one problem: a chessboard has no natural limit on how many cards you could dump onto it. Without a cost, the correct play is always to empty your hand, and the board stops being a puzzle.
A resource pool turns each turn into a small budget decision. Do you spend everything on one strong piece now, or hold back and play two cheap ones after the enemy commits? It is the same question Slay the Spire and its descendants ask with a hand of cards and no board, moved onto a grid where the square you pick costs you something too. If you want the broader version of that argument, we wrote it up in why deckbuilder games are addictive.
Not every game in the family needs one. Movement decks are held in check by the hand you drew, which is why they read as puzzles while the summon and effect games read as fights.
The draft loop, and why it is the harder half
The deck part of a chess deckbuilder gets built between encounters. You win a board, you get an offer, you pick one card, the deck is now slightly different and slightly worse at some things. Repeat until the run ends. That loop is what a good roguelike is built out of, and it is where most chess hybrids stop short.
Stopping short is common enough that it deserves its own list. Six games sit close to the definition at the top of this page without meeting it, and here is the half each one is missing.
- Passant: A Chess Roguelike collects pieces, items and badges between rounds and twists the rules with things like Atomic Chess and Zombie Pawns. It is a chess roguelike with no deck to draw from.
- Gambonanza hands you over 150 rule bending gambits, tile upgrades and a shop, and asks you to capture every piece on the board, not only the king. The loop is shop then board, closer to Balatro than to a deckbuilder.
- Gambetto deals faction card pools that mix movement cards, piece abilities and combo spells on a 5 by 5 board, which is the roster model with effect cards stacked on top. It is online player versus player, so it is a card game with chess movement rather than a run based one, and nothing accumulates once the match ends.
- The Ouroboros King assembles an army from fairy chess pieces, relics and bought gadgets. Its own store page never mentions a deck.
- Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate offers two random combinations after each floor, one upgrade for you and one for the enemy. That is the draft half with nothing to draft into, and we covered it separately in games like Shotgun King.
- Chessarama is eight chess derived puzzle and strategy games in one package. No run, no deck, and it never claimed either.

Updated August 2026: every price is the regular Steam price in USD, never a sale price, and the review counts come from the same check. Three of the four sit under 100 reviews, so the ratings here are soft evidence.
For the wider card genre without the board, our best roguelike deckbuilders list is the better starting point, including for beginners.
Where our own game sits
Hellmate, our own game, sits next to this list rather than on it. It is roguelike deckbuilding chess set in the seven floors of Hell: each floor belongs to a deadly sin, and you summon pieces and cast spells with mana to melt that sin’s king before your turns run out. It is unreleased, its Steam page lists 19 January 2027 as of August 2026, and nobody outside the studio has played it, so there is nothing to point at yet beyond the design.
Quick answers
Is a chess deckbuilder the same thing as a chess roguelike? No. A chess roguelike only needs run structure and permanent loss. A chess deckbuilder additionally needs a deck you draw from and add to, which is why Passant and Gambonanza sit in the roguelike group alone.
Do I need to know chess to play one? No. Pawnbarian’s own store page says you can pick up the basics in minutes without chess experience, and Usurper and Yes, My Queen both replace enough of the rules that grandmaster habits stop being an advantage.
How many released chess deckbuilders are on Steam? Four that I could verify against a store page: Pawnbarian, Chess: The Lost Pieces, Usurper and Yes, My Queen. The genre is thin, which is also why the label gets stretched over games that only share half of it.
Does every chess deckbuilder use mana? No. Summon and effect decks need a resource pool to keep you from emptying your hand in one turn, while movement decks limit you by hand size instead and skip mana entirely.
