Deckbuilders Where Grid Position Actually Matters
Updated October 2, 2026
The short answer
Updated August 2026. Buy StarVaders first. Of everything below, it is the game where the square you pick carries the most weight.
A grid deckbuilder is a deckbuilding game where every card is played to a square rather than into a stack, so a grid deckbuilder asks you where before it asks you what.
“Grid” is doing three different jobs in this genre, and store pages rarely say which one you are buying.
The three things people mean by grid
| What the grid is | What it changes | Games in frame |
|---|---|---|
| The fight | Every card resolves against a position. Range, adjacency and knockback are the game. | StarVaders, Fights in Tight Spaces, HELLCARD, Alina of the Arena, Monster Train |
| The run | You walk a map between fights and pick routes. The fights themselves are positionless. | Into The Grid, Mahokenshi |
| The pieces | You are moving chess-shaped things and the cards are the movement. | Pawnbarian, The Ouroboros King |
If you searched for card games where position matters and came away disappointed, there is a good chance you bought a row-two game while wanting a row-one game. All three are sold with the same word.
Row one: the grid is the fight
StarVaders
A Chrono Token that lets you “rewind time” when a placement goes wrong is the tell (Steam). A game only hands you an undo when it expects you to lose runs to one bad square. You pilot a mech against descending invaders, and the store page is unusually literal about the rest of the design: “tactical grid-based combat with deckbuilding strategy”. Buy StarVaders first if you want the grid to carry the whole fight.
Fights in Tight Spaces
The walls hit back. Its Steam page asks you to “balance your hand, momentum, and positioning” and lists “Control the Space: Use the environment against your adversaries” as a headline feature (Steam). In practice the corner you got backed into and the thug standing behind you are both part of your damage output, which is a very different skill from deck sculpting. Get Fights in Tight Spaces if that sounds like the good part rather than a distraction.
Worth knowing before you buy: it is Windows only, with no macOS or Linux build listed.
HELLCARD
“What makes HELLCARD unique and different from other deck-building games is that monster placement actually matters and can be used to your advantage” (Steam). That is the developer’s own line and it holds up: the interesting information on screen is where the enemies are standing, not what is in your hand. HELLCARD is also the one to get for a group, since it supports co-op for up to three heroes, which is rare in this shape of game.
Alina of the Arena
Hexes instead of squares, which changes the geometry of every retreat. The store page sells “roguelike deckbuilding and hex-based tactics” and says the tactics layer “adds a dimension of positioning” where you can “dupe your enemies into attacking each other” (Steam). Its page names Slay the Spire and Into the Breach as its two parents, and the design shows the split: the card economy and the run structure come from the first, while enemy intent is telegraphed a turn ahead so that stepping out of the way, or arranging for something else to be standing there, is the second one’s whole trick. Alina of the Arena is the best hex option here.
Monster Train
Monster Train is the safest recommendation on this page and also the coarsest grid on it. There are only “three vertical play fields to defend” (Steam), and the sequel still sells itself on “classic three-tiered, vertical gameplay” (Steam). Three positions is barely a grid, but it is enough: a card spent on the bottom floor is not helping on the top one, and that single constraint carries the whole game.
Platform note: the original is Windows only, while Monster Train 2 adds macOS.
Row two: the grid is the run, not the fight
Into The Grid
The grid in the name is the map, not the arena. The store page sells “deeply tactical map exploration with resource management” and frames the run as a series of route decisions: “Fight or flee? Visit this area now or later?” (Steam). The card battles run on a dual-resource system, and placement plays no part in them. Buy Into The Grid only if the grid you actually want is the map between fights, and read its review count in the table below before you read its score.
Mahokenshi
Mahokenshi is the one I would not buy for the grid. You travel the Celestial Islands and the ground under you matters, in the store page’s own words: “each terrain offers different advantages, so plan your actions with the surroundings in mind” (Steam). But the page talks about terrain and maps, never about placing cards onto positions, and the fights resolve as card exchanges. It is a good deckbuilder wearing a map. If squares are the whole reason you are shopping, start somewhere else.
Row three: the grid is the pieces
Pawnbarian
“Play cards to move your hero like a chess piece” is the entire pitch, and the runs are 15 to 30 minutes (Steam). Pawnbarian is the cheapest clean version of the idea and the quickest to understand. The developer also publishes a “Not Features” list, which I wish more people did: no permanent upgrades, and no complex varied builds. You are buying a positioning puzzle and very little else. If that lands, our chess roguelike roundup goes deeper on the same shape.
The Ouroboros King
The Ouroboros King is the loosest fit here and I want to say so before recommending it. You assemble an army of classic and fairy chess pieces and buy relics instead of drafting a hand of cards, so calling it a deckbuilder is a stretch. What it does share is the constraint that makes grid games tense: “You can only move one piece per turn, so you must choose carefully” (Steam). Its own store page credits Shotgun King, Pawnbarian and Into the Breach as inspirations. More on it in our chess roguelike roundup.
Why Shotgun King is missing
Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate is the name most people expect in this corner, and it is left out on purpose. Its cards are drafted between rounds as permanent upgrades and matching drawbacks, and nothing is ever played to a square, so it misses the definition at the top of this post: the grid is real, the deck is not. It is still the first chess roguelike I would hand anyone, and games like Shotgun King covers that corner properly.
The table
Every figure here comes from the Steam page linked in that game’s entry above, checked on 20 August 2026. Prices are the regular Steam price, not a sale price, and review figures are the all-time totals.
| Game | Price (USD) | Positive | Reviews | Grid does what |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| StarVaders | 24.99 | 97.1 | 4,321 | Whole fight |
| Monster Train | 24.99 | 95.9 | 22,916 | Three floors |
| Alina of the Arena | 14.99 | 91.5 | 3,962 | Hex arena |
| Fights in Tight Spaces | 24.99 | 90.0 | 3,921 | Room and walls |
| Pawnbarian | 9.99 | 89.0 | 894 | Piece movement |
| HELLCARD | 24.99 | 85.7 | 4,662 | Enemy placement |
| Into The Grid | 14.99 | 85.0 | 220 | Run map |
| The Ouroboros King | 9.99 | 80.3 | 569 | Piece movement |
| Mahokenshi | 24.99 | 77.3 | 620 | Terrain only |
Ranked by Steam’s positive percentage, which is a rough instrument: Into The Grid’s 220 reviews and Monster Train’s 22,916 are not the same kind of number. Read the review count before you read the percentage.
Where our own game sits
Hellmate sits beside this list rather than on it, which is why it has no row in the table above. It is a roguelike deckbuilding chess game set in the seven floors of Hell, where each floor belongs to a deadly sin and every sin crowns its own king. You spend mana to summon pieces onto the grid and brand them with sigils, so the cards decide which squares you can threaten on the turn after this one, which is row-three behaviour. It is unreleased and dated 19 January 2027 (as of August 2026), so there is nothing to point at yet: no scores, no player numbers, nothing anyone has finished. It is Windows and macOS, single-player only.
If the chess-grid corner is what you came for, the wider survey is best chess roguelikes, and the mechanical definition lives in what is a chess deckbuilder.
Quick answers
Which grid deckbuilder should I buy first? StarVaders. Its store page names the grid before it names the deck, and its rewind mechanic exists because single placements decide runs.
Is Monster Train a grid deckbuilder? Yes, but barely. Three vertical play fields is a grid with three cells, so a card spent on one floor is not defending the other two, and that is far coarser than the arenas in StarVaders or Fights in Tight Spaces.
What is the cheapest way to try the idea? 9.99 USD, which is the regular price of both Pawnbarian and The Ouroboros King (as of August 2026). Pawnbarian runs take 15 to 30 minutes, so it never asks for a whole evening.
Does Slay the Spire count? No. Slay the Spire has no positional grid at all, and a card resolves the same way wherever an enemy happens to be standing. For adjacent recommendations see the best roguelike deckbuilders, including the roguelike deckbuilders that aren’t Slay the Spire clones.
