Idle Games on Steam Without Microtransactions
Updated October 2, 2026
Which idle games on Steam have no microtransactions?
Six idle games on Steam had no in-game store when we checked their pages in September 2026: Melvor Idle, Cookie Clicker, Rusty’s Retirement, Ropuka’s Idle Island, Kittens Game and Creature Card Idle. Five are one-time purchases and Creature Card Idle costs nothing at all. The best of them is Melvor Idle, with the caveat that it sells three paid expansions.
Updated September 2026.
How did we check for microtransactions?
We looked at three things on each Steam page, all on the check date:
- Steam’s “In-App Purchases” feature label, which sits in the same list as Achievements and Cloud saves.
- The rating notice under “Content”, where a rating board’s “In-game purchases” descriptor appears if the game sells anything inside itself.
- The DLC list, because a paid expansion or a supporter pack is money you can spend even when the game has no shop.
A game made this list only if neither of the first two labels was present. The DLC list goes in the table as it is, so you can see what else is for sale and decide for yourself whether a paid expansion counts. We do not count one, and the column is there for readers who do.
All six are incremental games, meaning a game built around numbers that grow faster than you can spend them, where you buy something that makes more of the resource, which buys more of that thing, until the scale changes and new systems appear. Our explainer on what an incremental game is covers how idle, clicker and incremental differ.
Which idle games passed, and what else can you pay for?
Prices are the regular Steam US price, review counts are Steam’s all-language totals, both as of September 2026.
| Game | Steam price (as of September 2026) | Steam reviews (as of September 2026) | In-game store | What else you can pay for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Melvor Idle | $9.99 | 16,246 | None | 3 expansions at $4.99 each |
| Cookie Clicker | $4.99 | 93,357 | None | The soundtrack, $4.99 |
| Rusty’s Retirement | $6.99 | 14,862 | None | A cosmetic Supporter Pack, $3.99 |
| Ropuka’s Idle Island | $3.99 | 4,310 | None | The soundtrack, $1.99 |
| Kittens Game | $7.99 | 79 | None | Nothing |
| Creature Card Idle | Free | 174 | None | Nothing |
Melvor Idle
Melvor Idle is the deepest idle game on this list and the one we would buy first. It takes a RuneScape-style skill grind, 20+ skills from Woodcutting to Magic, and runs it while you are elsewhere; its offline progression simulates up to 24 hours (as of September 2026) of whatever you were training. The base game is $9.99 (as of September 2026). The three expansions, Throne of the Herald, Atlas of Discovery and Into the Abyss, are $4.99 each (as of September 2026) and add new areas, monsters and skills. They are content, sold once, with no currency or boosts attached.
Cookie Clicker
Cookie Clicker is the genre’s reference game, and the Steam version asks for $4.99 (as of September 2026) and nothing else. The only other item on its page is the C418 soundtrack at $4.99 (as of September 2026). The Steam build adds cloud saves and Workshop mods on top of the 2013 browser game, with 93,357 reviews (as of September 2026) behind it. If you have never played an idle game, start here.
Rusty’s Retirement
Rusty’s Retirement is the best pick for a second monitor. It is a farm that sits in a strip along the bottom of your screen while you work, with a robot planting, watering and harvesting crops that become biofuel. The Supporter Pack is $3.99 (as of September 2026) and its own page says it is one golden skin with “no in-game bonuses”, so it is a tip jar rather than a shortcut. Review count: 14,862 (as of September 2026).
Ropuka’s Idle Island
Ropuka’s Idle Island is the smallest game here, and the cheapest paid one at $3.99 (as of September 2026). A frog cuts grass on a resizable island you can drop anywhere on your desktop, and the grass is the currency you spend on tools and decorations. The only extra is a $1.99 soundtrack (as of September 2026). One limit: the Steam page lists Windows only.
Kittens Game
Kittens Game is the right pick if you want a civilisation to grow out of a single catnip field. It came to Steam in Early Access on 10 February 2026 for $7.99 (as of September 2026), has no DLC listed, and has only 79 reviews (as of September 2026), so the Steam version is still young. The original browser version is still online if you want to try it before paying.
Creature Card Idle
Creature Card Idle is the answer if you want free and no store. Its Steam page promises “NO ads and NO microtransactions” and all three expansions included. You place cards on a grid to generate resources and buy booster packs with them. It is Windows and Linux only, and has 174 reviews (as of September 2026).
Which popular idle games failed the check?
Two well-known free idle games did not pass, and the labels that failed them are worth knowing.
AdVenture Capitalist has no In-App Purchases label in Steam’s feature list, but its rating notice lists “In-game purchases”, and its DLC list carries a Savvy Investor Bundle of 115 Gold Bars for $9.99 (as of September 2026). The feature list alone would have let it through, which is why we check the rating notice too.
Antimatter Dimensions carries the In-App Purchases label, and its own description says “We added a shop!” It is still one of the deepest free incrementals on Steam. It just does not belong on this list.
Which one should you play first?
Melvor Idle if you want depth, Rusty’s Retirement if you want something to glance at while you work, and Cookie Clicker if you have never played the genre. For a finish line instead of an endless loop, see our list of idle games that actually end. If you want short check-ins more than long nights, our list of games for 30-minute sessions is a good companion to this one.
Quick answers
Does Cookie Clicker on Steam have microtransactions? No. As of September 2026 the Steam version is a one-time $4.99 purchase, and the only extra on its page is the $4.99 soundtrack by C418.
Is Melvor Idle pay to win? No. Its three $4.99 expansions (as of September 2026) add areas, monsters and skills, and nothing sold on its Steam page is a currency or a boost.
Is there a free idle game on Steam with nothing to buy? Yes. Creature Card Idle is free, carries no In-App Purchases label, and includes all three of its expansions at no cost.
How can I tell if a Steam game has in-game purchases? Two places. Look for “In-App Purchases” in the feature list on the right, then check the “Content” rating notice for “In-game purchases”. AdVenture Capitalist shows only the second.
Where our game fits
Our own game, Sam, We Talked About This, is an idle incremental game, and it sits beside this list rather than on it. The games above passed a check of their store pages; ours is unreleased, due on Steam in Q1 2027, and has no price set yet, so its store page has nothing to check. The loop, for context: you scrape data, train models, let the models win subscribers, and turn subscribers into cash for more disks, bigger machines and a bigger crew, with AGI waiting at the end. The Steam page for Sam, We Talked About This is live if you want to follow it.
