Games Like Luck be a Landlord Where You Find the Combo
Updated October 2, 2026
The 30-second answer
Luck be a Landlord gets filed under “slot machine game”, and that label hides what people are chasing when they finish it and go looking for the next one. It is the spin where a symbol you grabbed on a whim turns out to feed a symbol you took twenty spins earlier, and the payout doubles while you sit there doing nothing.
If you want that snowball at its biggest, buy Balatro. If the part that hooked you was that where a thing sat changed what it did, Backpack Battles is the one, as long as you are on Windows or Linux, because it ships no macOS build. Those two open every list on this query, so their entries here are two lines each and the four names you probably have not been handed yet come first.
Updated August 2026.
What you are actually hunting
Synergy discovery is finding out that two pieces you picked up separately multiply each other, and it dies the moment the card just tells you they will.
Luck be a Landlord is built almost entirely out of that. Its own Steam store page sells the symbols on the promise that each one “has different effects and interactions”, and it never says which. The slot machine is a readout for what your symbols did this turn, and the same page states the game “does not contain any real-world currency gambling or microtransactions”. Rent is just the clock that forces you to commit to a build before you have finished testing it.
So the useful question is not “what other slot machine games are there”, it is which games hand you pieces and let you work out the multiplication yourself. That is the thread running through everything below, and it is why the list includes a physics platformer and two chessboards.
The eight, at a glance
The best single pick is Balatro: nothing else here opens as wide a gap between what a run looks like on turn one and what it looks like on turn forty. Slice & Dice gives you the most puzzle per dollar. StarVaders is the one I would push hardest on a reader who already owns those two.
| Game | The synergy you hunt | Regular price | Steam reviews (as of August 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balatro | Jokers that multiply each other’s multipliers | $14.99 | 197,203 at 97.8% positive |
| Backpack Battles | Items that change effect based on what they touch | $14.99 | 20,614 at 91.2% positive |
| Slice & Dice | Hero abilities that convert each other’s dice | $8.99 | 2,561 at 96.9% positive |
| StarVaders | Cards whose effects chain across grid positions | $24.99 | 4,321 at 97.1% positive |
| Mosa Lina | Physics tools the designer never tested together | $7.99 | 2,119 at 95.6% positive |
| Gambonanza | Rule-breaking upgrades stacked on chess pieces | $14.99 | 1,613 at 75.6% positive |
| The Ouroboros King | Relics and gadgets bolted onto a chess army | $9.99 | 569 at 80.3% positive |
| Dicey Dungeons | Equipment that rewrites what a die is worth | $14.99 | 11,805 at 89.1% positive |
Four less obvious picks
StarVaders
At $24.99 StarVaders is the most expensive entry here, two and a half times Luck be a Landlord’s own $9.99 regular price, and it is still the game I would put second behind Balatro. You pilot a mech defending Earth, deckbuilding fused with grid tactics, and a card’s worth depends on where the aliens happen to be standing when you play it. Its store blurb promises you will “discover game-breaking combos”, which for once describes the actual loop.
Mosa Lina
Mosa Lina goes further than anything else on this page, because it removes the designer’s opinion about which tools should work together. It bills itself as “a hostile interpretation of the immersive sim, where nothing is planned, and everything works”, and the developer writes on the store page that “it’s literally impossible for me to check if all levels are beatable with all combinations of tools.”
That is synergy discovery with the safety rail removed. The same page warns there are no safeguards and you might draw the same item ten times in a row. It is a physics puzzle platformer, not a card game, and there is no run economy to optimise, so it sits alongside the rest of this list as its own thing.
The Ouroboros King
A pawn still moves like a pawn, and that is the point: The Ouroboros King hangs the relic hunt on chess movement you already know. Its store page describes a run as assembling an army, discovering relics and buying gadgets to defeat the Coven, and the gadgets are where the surprises live. A piece you thought you had understood starts doing something the rulebook never mentioned.
It also has the smallest audience of the eight by a wide margin, 569 reviews against Gambonanza’s 1,613, so expect far less community documentation when a relic does something you cannot explain. We wrote more about it in our chess roguelike roundup.
Gambonanza
Start with the weak part: at 75.6% positive across 1,613 reviews, Gambonanza carries the lowest score of the eight, about five points under The Ouroboros King. The idea lands more consistently than the execution does, and the idea is worth the trouble. Its store page sets chess pieces on a tiny board and asks you to “experiment with illegal combinations”, listing more than 150 Gambits that alter the rules of a run plus tile upgrades and an off-board piece reserve. If you want the combo hunt on a chessboard and can live with a rough patch, this is the one.
The four you have already been told about
Balatro
Balatro reproduces Luck be a Landlord’s late-run feeling, when a single addition turns your score into a number you cannot read at a glance. The thing to know before you buy: every joker prints its effect on the card, so the discovery is in the stacking, and working out that two things interact at all is the part Luck be a Landlord keeps for itself. It runs on Windows and macOS, with no Linux build.
Backpack Battles
An item’s neighbours decide what that item does, which nothing else on this list attempts: sit the right two things next to each other and they merge into a third, and the recipe list is something you learn by fiddling. Its store page puts it plainly: “It matters what you buy, and especially how you place it.” Two things to weigh. It is a player-versus-player auto battler, so what your build gets held up against is another person’s build, and there is no rent number anywhere. And it ships for Windows and Linux only, with no macOS build, which rules it out for a chunk of Luck be a Landlord’s audience.
Slice & Dice
Five heroes, their dice, and one turn to solve. There is no economy at all here, which is how a $8.99 game ends up giving you the most puzzle per dollar on this list. The store page counts 473 items and 128 hero classes, and that is the size of the interaction space you are being asked to learn. It also lets you undo actions freely, so experimenting costs nothing but attention. If the rent timer in Luck be a Landlord felt like pressure you did not want, this is the version without it.
Dicey Dungeons
Hand this one to someone who bounced off Slay the Spire. Each of the six classes rewires the same dice-into-equipment loop: the store description explains that the Inventor “must destroy their own equipment after each fight to get parts for powerful new gadgets”, and the Thief steals enemy equipment every turn.
The limitation is scope. Episodes are short and deliberately capped, so no run reaches the runaway state that makes Luck be a Landlord’s last few spins funny. You get the combination puzzle without the snowball.
If it was the word landlord that got you
Some people search this query because of the word landlord itself. Two games sit on that side, and neither is a roguelike.
| Game | What it actually is | Regular price | Steam reviews (as of August 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Tenants | Renovate flats, screen tenants, handle complaints | $19.99 | 7,761 at 78.9% positive |
| Landlord’s Super | First-person 1980s life sim about mixing cement and laying bricks | $19.99 | 1,707 at 80.6% positive |
Neither one gives you the combination puzzle. What they give you is the other half of the fantasy: the building, the tenants, the money that arrives because you arranged something well. If that is the half you came for, our roundup of apartment building management games is the better door, and what games get right about being a landlord covers how few of them let you be the bad guy.
One from us, sitting beside the list
Our own game Hellmate sits beside this list, and it is unreleased, so there is nothing to rank it against yet. It is a chess deckbuilder, meaning a game where you play cards onto a chessboard instead of moving a fixed army: cards summon pieces, cast spells or upgrade what is already there, and the deck grows across a run. The synergy layer is the sigil system, the branding you put on your army as a run goes on, and it is due 19 January 2027 on Steam for Windows and macOS.
If the genre interests you more than our version of it, best chess roguelikes and what is a chess deckbuilder are the pages to read instead, and roguelike deckbuilders to wishlist lists things you can play sooner.
Quick answers
Is Balatro the best game like Luck be a Landlord? Yes for most players. It is the only entry here that reaches the same runaway state, where one addition doubles a score you had already stopped worrying about, and its store listing frames the whole design as “creating powerful synergies”.
Does Luck be a Landlord contain real gambling? No. Its Steam listing states the game “does not contain any real-world currency gambling or microtransactions”. The slot machine is a way of showing you which of your symbols fired this turn.
How many of these run on a Mac? Seven of the eight. Backpack Battles is the only one without a macOS build, and it ships for Windows and Linux. Those platform lists came off the eight Steam pages on 20 August 2026 and builds do get added, so glance at the icons before you buy.
Which of them are actually card games? Two. Balatro and StarVaders deal you cards. Dicey Dungeons deals equipment but the resource you spend is dice, Slice & Dice runs on dice alone, Backpack Battles on inventory items, Gambonanza and The Ouroboros King on chess pieces, and Mosa Lina on physics tools.
Every price, score, review count and platform list on this page came from the Steam store on 20 August 2026 and will drift. The regular price is quoted throughout, so anything on sale when you look will read lower.
