Games Where You Run a Tech Company, From Garage to Giant
Updated October 2, 2026
Which games let you run a tech company?
Updated September 2026.
The best game where you run a tech company is Software Inc., because it lets you build the office, hire the team and ship both software and hardware. Start with Game Dev Tycoon if you want something smaller. For chips, play Hardware Tycoon; for a web platform, Startup Company; for a whole computer and operating system, Computer Tycoon.
This list is sorted by the one thing that changes how these games play: what your company actually makes. Software, games, chips or a whole platform each give you a different set of problems to run.
A management sim is a game where you run a system instead of a character: you lay out the space, place the people, spend money and time you never have enough of, then watch the system push back. In a tech tycoon, the system is a company that has to keep shipping. Our longer take is in what makes a management sim fun.
Which tech company game is the best?
Software Inc. is the best tech-company game overall and the deepest. Game Dev Tycoon is the best one to start with, because it is short, cheap and the most reviewed here. The table sorts all nine by what you build. Two of them, Software Inc. and Computer Tycoon, are still in Early Access on Steam (as of September 2026).
| Game | What you build | Where it starts | Released on Steam | Regular price (as of September 2026) | Steam reviews (as of September 2026) |

| Software Inc. | Software, then hardware | An empty plot you build on | May 1, 2015 | $22.99 | 7,841 |
| Startup Panic | Software projects and a startup | A bedroom programmer | January 20, 2022 | $14.99 | 289 |
| Game Dev Tycoon | Games and game engines | A garage in the 80s | August 29, 2013 | $9.99 | 45,123 |
| Game Dev Story | Games, then your own console | A tiny studio | March 27, 2022 | $8.99 | 1,509 |
| Mad Games Tycoon 2 | Games, consoles, factories, servers | A garage, any year from 1976 | May 31, 2023 | $24.99 | 7,822 |
| Hardware Tycoon | CPUs and the fabs that make them | 1986 | May 18, 2026 | $11.99 | 34 |
| Good Company | Tech products on production lines | A garage workshop | June 21, 2022 | $24.99 | 1,793 |
| Startup Company | A website that takes on the giants | A small office and a small investment | April 10, 2020 | $12.99 | 6,224 |
| Computer Tycoon | Computers, an operating system, a platform | The 70s | October 12, 2017 | $19.99 | 1,022 |
Which games are about building software?
Software Inc. is the one to buy if you want the whole company in your hands. Coredumping’s game has you buy plots on a large map, design your own building with no grid, and hire people to design and release software and, later, hardware. The long game is taking over the simulated competition and making them work for you. It is still in Early Access after launching there on May 1, 2015, at $22.99 regular with 7,841 Steam reviews (as of September 2026), and it is the most complete sandbox on this page.
Startup Panic is the smaller, stranger option. You begin as a bedroom programmer choosing between projects, contract work and vacation days, then grow a startup, hire staff with their own quirks, and climb a skill tree while rival CEOs work against you. The Steam page warns that you might get hacked, or kidnapped, on the way up. Algorocks made it and tinyBuild published it on January 20, 2022; its 289 Steam reviews are rated Mixed (as of September 2026), so read a few before you buy.
Which games are about running a game studio?
Game Dev Tycoon is the best starting point on the list. Greenheart Games starts you in a garage office in the 80s and walks you through the history of the industry: make small games, research new technology, build your first engine, invent new game types. It came out on August 29, 2013, costs $9.99 regular and has 45,123 Steam reviews (as of September 2026), the most of any game here. HowLongToBeat puts the main playthrough at 8.6 hours (as of September 2026), short for a tycoon.
Game Dev Story is Kairosoft’s take, and the pocket-sized one. You hire staff, train them, switch their professions, find the genre and theme combinations that sell, and eventually build your own console. It arrived on Steam on March 27, 2022, after years on phones, and HowLongToBeat has it at 7.2 hours for the main run (as of September 2026).
Mad Games Tycoon 2 is the big one. Eggcode lets you start in any year from 1976 to 2020 and grow from a garage studio into a corporation that builds its own offices, production facilities and server rooms, releases games on consoles, handhelds and arcade machines, and eventually produces its own console. Steam lists its release as May 31, 2023; it is $24.99 regular, with 7,822 Steam reviews (as of September 2026).
If the studio-sim side is what you want, Springloaded’s Let’s Build a Dungeon, where you run a studio making an MMORPG, lists February 11, 2027 on its Steam page (as of September 2026). We covered it in games like Two Point Hospital.
Which games are about making hardware?
Hardware Tycoon is the newest game here and the only one about chips. NordCode’s game runs from 1986 to 2026: you design CPUs by choosing core counts, clock speeds, cache and thermals, then decide whether to run your own fabs or manufacture for rivals. It released on May 18, 2026 at $11.99 regular, and its 34 Steam reviews are rated Mixed (as of September 2026). It is early days, so treat it as the pick for chip nerds, not the safe one.
Good Company is the factory version of a tech company. Chasing Carrots turns a garage into a manufacturing headquarters: you buy materials, hire staff, and lay out production lines and logistics that turn parts into products you sell. Think of it as a tech corporation where the hard part is the floor plan. Steam lists its release as June 21, 2022, and it sits at $24.99 regular with 1,793 Steam reviews (as of September 2026).
Which games let you own a whole platform?
Startup Company is the platform game for the web. Hovgaard Games makes you CEO of a startup with a small investment and one job: build a website that can compete with the largest tech giants. You develop and improve features, add hosting capacity as users arrive, run marketing campaigns, and decorate an office that grows with you. Steam lists its release as April 10, 2020; it is $12.99 regular with 6,224 Steam reviews (as of September 2026).
Computer Tycoon is the grand-strategy take. Progorion starts you in the 70s and runs the research race to 2034: you build hardware and an operating system, manage infrastructure and marketing, and even pick video games to promote on your platform, all from a world map instead of a building. It has been in Early Access since October 12, 2017, at $19.99 regular with 1,022 Steam reviews (as of September 2026). If the joke side of Silicon Valley is more your speed, our list of games that satirize big tech goes the other way.
Quick answers
What is the best game where you run a tech company? Software Inc. It covers the building, the hiring, and both software and hardware, and it has the deepest sandbox here. Game Dev Tycoon is the better first game if you want something short.
Is there a game where you build your own computer company? Yes, two. Computer Tycoon covers computers and an operating system from the 70s to 2034, and Hardware Tycoon covers CPU design and chip fabs from 1986 to 2026.
Which tech tycoon games are finished and which are still in Early Access? Two of the nine are in Early Access: Software Inc. and Computer Tycoon. The other seven are full releases on Steam, with Hardware Tycoon the newest.
How long is Game Dev Tycoon? About 8.6 hours for the main playthrough on HowLongToBeat, and Game Dev Story is a little shorter at 7.2. The others have too few logged main-story times there to give a fair number.
Where our game fits
Our own game, Sam, We Talked About This, sits beside this list rather than on it. Every game above asks you to decide what to build and when to ship it; Sam is an idle incremental game, and its company is a loop that feeds itself. You scrape whatever the internet has, train text, image and video models on it, rack the models to win subscribers, and put the cash into more disks, bigger machines and a bigger crew, until the loop speeds up and AGI is waiting at the end. It is unreleased, due on Steam in Q1 2027, so there is nothing to point at yet beyond its Steam page.
